eAuction #10, Lot 54. Estimate: CHF 10'000.00
Ptolemic Kings of Egypt. Ptolemy I Soter (305-282 BC). AV Pentadrachm (17.77 g), c. 294/285 BC, Alexandria mint. Obv Diademed head of Ptolemy I right, wearing aegis, small Δ behind ear. Rev. Eagle standing to left on thunderbolt; monogram to left. Svoronos 210; Dewing 2740.
Very rare. Good very fine.
On this coin we encounter the first true portrait of one of Alexander’s successors. The tiny letter Δ found in his hair behind the ear is the initial of the engraver, the so called Delta-Master.
From the JDR collection of Gold coins from Philip II and his successors.
