eAuction #10, Lot 65. Estimate: CHF 750.00
Plautilla (202-205 AD). AE22 (6.44 g), Aegina, Attica. Obv. ΦOYΛBIA ΠΛAYTIΛΛA, draped bust right. Rev. AIΓINHTΩN, Poseidon standing left, holding dolphin in right hand and long trident in left. Milbank p. 59, e and plate V, 10; BMC-; cf. NCP p. 46.
Extremely rare. Slightly rough, otherwise, good very fine.
Provincials coins from Aegina are extremely rare, with apparently no specimen showing up in an auction during the last decade. Style and flan of the coin clearly show a strong connection to the - in part rather abundant - Provincial coinage of the Peloponnesos, making it obvious that it was struck in a mainland mint.
