eAuction #13, Los 5. Schätzpreis: CHF 7'500.00

Abdera, Thrace. AR Oktodrachm (28 mm, 27.82 g), c. 500-475 BC.
Obv. Griffin seated left, raising right forepaw; to left, ivy-leaf.
Rev. Quadripartite incuse square.
May cf. p. 74, 33; Asyut p. 36, 130.

Very rare and impressive. About extremely fine.

After having been destroyed by Thracian tribes in the 7th Century, Abdera was refounded by Teos in 545 and took over its mothercity's emblem, the griffin. Due to its favorable strategic position, the city quickly became an important centre of trade and boasted its wealth with spectacular coins like this Oktodrachm. Abdera also was the home city of the famous philosophers Leukippos, Demokritos, Protagoras and Anaxarchos.
