eAuction #13, Lot 54. Estimate: CHF 600.00
Hadrianus (117-138 AD). AE Sestertius (32 mm, 26.82 g), Roma (Rome), 118 AD. Obv. IMP CAESAR TRAIANVS HADRIANVS AVG, laureate bust right, drapery on left shoulder. Rev. PONT MAX TR POT COS II / ADVENTVS AVG / S C, Roma, helmeted, seated right on cuirass, holding spear in left hand, clasping right hand with Hadrian, who stands left, togate. RIC II, p. 408, 547 (R).
Rare. Good very fine.
An interesting early issue, commemorating the arrival of the new emperor in Rome. Hadrian, whose claim to the throne was not beyond any doubt, is shown clasping the hand of Roma, thus boasting his legitimacy as heir of the deceased Optimus Princeps Traianus.
