eAuction #21, Lot 121. Estimate: CHF 350.00
Philippus I (244-249 AD). AR Antoninianus (21-25 mm, 3.96 g), Roma (Rome), 247-249 AD. Obv. IMP PHILIPPVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind. Rev. VICTORIA CARPICA, Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm. RIC IV, 1, 66.
Rare. Very fine.
This coin was struck to celebrate Philip's victory over the Carpi, a Dacian tribe, from whom the Carpatian mountains were likely named.
