eAuction #21, Lot 107. Estimate: CHF 500.00

Hadrianus (117-138 AD). AE Sestertius (31 mm, 24.17 g), Roma (Rome), 134-138 AD.
Obv. HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P, bare-headed and draped bust right, seen from behind.
Rev. ADVENTVI AVG IVDAEAE, Hadrian, togate, on left, standing right, holding roll and raising right hand to the personification of Judaea standing left, holding box and patera over altar; at either side of Judaea, two children standing left, holding branch.
RIC II, 890c; BMC 1655.

Extremely rare and interesting. Good fine.

The reverse of this coin commemorates the visit of Hadrian in the province of Iudaea in 130 AD. It is likely that the emperor ordered the refounding of Jerusalem as a Roman colony named Aelia Capitolina on this occastion. Soon after, the Bar Kochba-revolt broke out and Hadrian had to remain in the region until the final subjugation of the Jewish revolt in 135 AD.
