eAuction #38, Lot 121. Estimate: CHF 900.00
Aelia Zenonis, wife of Basiliscus (475-476 AD). AE4 (0.92 g), Constantinopolis (Istanbul). Obv. A ZENONIS, pearl-diademed bust right. Rev. ZENONIS Monogram. RIC X, 1017; MIRB 14.
Very rare. Very fine, with a clear monogram.
Aelia Zenonis was the wife of Basiliscus, who led a short-lived usurpation against Zeno in 475. After the return of Zeno from his exile in 476, the generals Illus and Armatus - the latter allegedly being the lover of Aelia Zenonis - revolted against the usurper and opened the city-gates. Zeno had Basiliscus and Aelia Zenonis starved to death but also executed Armatus.
