eAuction #38, Lot 51. Estimate: CHF 100.00
Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD). AE24 (8.24 g), Carthago, Zeugitania, 10 AD. Obv. IMP C D F A P M P P, bare head left. Rev. P I SP D V SP IIVIR C I C around P P / D D. RPC I, 745; SNG Cop. 418.
Rare. Fan fault, otherwise, good fine.
After its destruction in 146 BC, Carthago was rebuilt by Iulius Caesar in 44 BC. In 29 BC, recolonized the city with civil war veterans and made it the capital of Africa proconsularis in 12 BC, thus laying the groundwork for the subsequent rise of Rome's old rival to one of the four big cities of the Roman Empire.
