Keryneia, Achaia. Under the Achaean League. AE Tetrachalkon (19 mm, 4.10 g), 188-146 BC. Obv. Zeus, nude, standing left, holding Nike in right and long sceptre in left; to left, monogram AK; to right, A. Rev. AXA... KAPYN, Achaia seated left, holding wreath in right and long sceptre in left. BMC -; Clerk 15; BCD Peloponnesos 500 (this coin).
Extremely rare. Fine.
From the BCD collection, ex LHS 96 (2006), 500, also, from an old collection, bought from Seltman in 1909 for 10 Shillings, and from the Rhousopoulos Collection, ex Hirsch XIII (1905), either lot 2418 or 2419 (both acquired by Seltman for a total of RM 6.50).
Keryneia was an obscure city south of Helike which only gained some importance after the destruction of Helike by an earthquake followed by a Tsunami in 373 BC.
