eAuction #38, Lot 88. Estimate: CHF 75.00

Hadrianus (117-138 AD). AR Denarius (19 mm, 3.14 g), Roma (Rome), 117 AD.
Obv. IMP CAES TRAIANO HADRIANO OPT AVG GER DAC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind.
Rev. PARTHIC DIVI TRAIAN AVG F P M TR P COS P P, Trajan and Hadrian standing right and left, holding globe between them.
RIC II, 2b (S).

Scarce. Very fine.

One of the earliest coins of Hadrian, issued shortly after Trajan's death. Hadrian's succession to the throne was not undisputed, and his adoption by Trajan may have been a complete invention. The reverse legend on this coin calls himself the f(ilius) (son) of his deceased predecessor, indicating that the new emperor felt the need to boast the legitimacy of his rule in his first issue of coins.
