eAuction #49, Los 133. Schätzpreis: CHF 75.00
Uncertain tribes, imitating Valentinianus I (364-375 AD). AE1 (28 mm, 9.11 g), uncertain mint. Obv. D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. Fantasy legend, Emperor in military dress standing left, holding labarum and Victory on globe. Cf. RIC 3 (Sirmium).
Very fine.
From the D.A.K. Collection.
What makes this imitation particularly charming is the fact that while the obverse legend is fully readable, the reverse is completely blundered - except for the PVBLICHE, which is spelled almost correctly. The dies apparently were the product of different die cutters, of which at least one was completely illiterate.
