Sicyon, Sicyonia. AR Stater (23-24 mm, 12.18 g), c. 431-400 BC.
Obv. Lion walking right on ground line, left paw raised; above, bow; below, ΣE.
Rev. Dove flying right with wings open; above and below twail, Σ/I; all withing olive wreath.
BMC -, Traité 797, pl. CCXXI, 21 (= Pozzi P 4064, same dies).
Very rare, apparently one of only eleven examples known with lion instead of Chimaera. Nicely toned and very fine.

This is one of the most unusual of all the Sicyon staters. It replaces the normal Chimaera by a lion, a type otherwise only found on an extensive series of contemporary hemiobols. The reason why this was done is unclear.
