eAuction #53, Lot 48. Estimate: CHF 75.00

Elis, under the Achaean League. AR Hemidrachm (16 mm, 1.83 g), c. 40s-30s BC.
Obv. Laureate head of Zeus right, KAΛΛIΠΠ behind.
Rev. Central monogram within laurel wreath; countermarked with NE in ligature.
Clerk 273-5. For countermark, see Howgego 623.

Probably unique. Host coin good, countermark very fine.

From the BCD collection and ex LHS 96 (2006), 692.1.

The ligate NE countermark occurs on Julius Caesar/ Octavian bronzes from Thessalonica issued by Domitian and thus in all probability stands for Nerva, which is most remarkable considering that the host coin here is a very worn pre-imperial Greek silver coin.
