eAuction #53, Lot 169. Estimate: CHF 75.00
Philippus I (244-249 AD). AR Antoninianus (23 mm, 5.93 g), Antioch (Antakya), 244. Obv. IMP C M IVL PHILIPPVS P F AVG P M, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust to right, seen from behind. Rev. SPES FELICITATIS ORBIS, Spes advancing left, holding flower and raising skirt. RIC IV 70.
Scarce. Struck on an unusually heavy flan. Very fine.
The P M in the obverse legend is to be expanded to Persicus Maximus, a somewhat ironic title for the new emperor who had agreed to pay 50 Million Sestertii in cash and an annual fee to the Persian king Shapur I in return of a peace treaty.
