eAuction #55, Lot 124. Estimate: CHF 250.00
Sextus
Pompeius Fostlus. AR
Denarius (18-19 mm, 3.94 g), Roma (Rome), c. 137 BC.
Obv. Helmeted
head of Roma right, X before and jug behind.
Rev. FOSTLVS SEX PO, she-wolf standing right,
head left, suckling twins (Romulus and Remus); behind, birds on fig tree; to
left, shepherd standing right.
Crawford 235/1c.
Reverse struck slightly off-center. Superb
extremely fine.
The reverse alludes to the families descent from
Faustulus, the shepherd who discovered Remus and Romulus being suckled by the
she-wolf on the Palatine Hill and afterwards raised the twins with his wife.
