eAuction #56, Lot 31. Estimate: CHF 150.00
Olympia, Elis. AE 2 Assaria (25 mm, 10.32 g), early 30s BC (?). Obv. Head of Hera right, wearing stephane. Rev. Eagle standing right on thunderbolt with closed wings, F- A in fields; to right, monogram of MI. Wroth p. 335, 3-4.
Rare. Good very fine.
From the BCD collection; ex Kress 178 (1980), 559 (sold for 1000 DM + fees) and ex Leu 90 (2004), 311.
The
date of this issue is controversial. Warren dates it to the 30s BC
based upon size and weight and connects it to Marc Antony and Cleopatra.
He sees the eagle on a thunderbolt, which is otherwise unknown at Olympia, as being a reference to the standard Ptolemaic reverse type.
