eAuction #56, Lot 653. Estimate: CHF 2'500.00
Brazil. Pedro II. CU-NI 50 Reis 1871 (22 mm, 7.14 g). KM Pn143 (7500 $); Russo 1.
Extremely rare, only 143 specimens minted. Virtually as struck and almost FDC.
There has
been discussion whether this piece is either a pattern or a coin.
Prober in his 1960 "Catalogue of Brazilian Coins"
lists this as an Ensaio or pattern. Later numismatic research pointed to
it being an actual strike for circulation but evidently only the 100
and 200 Reis of this series actually made into circulation. Records
indicate that only 143 were struck of which only very few actually exist
today.
