eAuction #56, Lot 687. Estimate: CHF 30'000.00

China, Empire. Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). AV Ingot n.d. (c. 1750) (367.2 g). Possibly part of the Nanking Cargo. Weight equal to approximately 10 Taels. Cast in a boat shape with stamped Chinese characters on the top and on the bottom.

Extremely rare. Extremely fine.

On Monday January 3, 1752, the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, VOC) ship Geldermalsen, struck a reef on her return journey to the Netherlands and sank in the South China Sea. Of the crew 32 survived and 80 went down with the ship and her cargo of tea, textiles, porcelain and gold ingots. The cargo was recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher and his team in 1985 and sold by Christie's Amsterdam on 28 April - 2 May 1985 as 'The Nanking Cargo. Chinese Export Porcelain and Gold'.
