eAuction #56, Lot 4. Estimate: CHF 5'000.00
Sicily, Leontinoi. AR Tetradrachm (24-26 mm,
17.11 g), c. 430-425 BC. Obv. Laureate head of Apollo left. Rev. Lion's head left, with open jaws and tongue protruding, around which
LEONTINON; laurel leaf behind, three barley-corns around. Boehringer, Leontinoi 55 (same dies); Rizzo pl. XXIV, 4 (same dies); SNG ANS
257 (same dies).
Insignificant minting-error in hair above the laurel wreath. With a lovely iridiscent toning. Well centered, virtually as struck and FDC.
This coin is an example of the work of the "maestro della
foglia", dubbed thus for his habit of “signing” his work with a special
type of leaf, instead of the usual initials or name: on the right side of the
reverse of this coin we find a laurel leaf.
