eAuction #56, Lot 175. Estimate: CHF 120.00

Antoninus Pius (138-161 AD). AE Sestertius (31 mm, 25.48 g), Rome, 147.
Obv. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS IIII, Laureate head right.
Rev. FELICITAS AVG / S - C in field, Felicitas standing left, holding capricorn and long winged caduceus.
RIC 770.

Green patina. Good very fine.

While the standard depiction of Felicitas shows her holding a caduceus and a cornucopiae, she is clearly holding a capricorn rather than the cornucopia on this coin. Augustus, Rome's first emperor, had been born while the moon was in the sign of Capricorn. Antoninus Pius is thus employing Augustus' imaginery in order to legitimize his own power.
