eAuction #57, Lot 58. Estimate: CHF 50.00
Claudius (41-54 AD). AE Sestertius (33-34 mm, 21.93 g). Uncertain eastern or Balkan mint. Obv. TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP P P,Laureate head right . Rev. SPES AVGVSTA / S-C, Spes walking left. Cf. RIC I 115; cf.
Von Kaenel 1353; cf. Cohen 85.
Fine/very fine.
In
an attempt to meet the needs of local demand, Claudius' aes coinage was
heavily imitated throughout the provinces. The styles of portraiture and lettering, as well as the relatively low weight of this imitation suggest it is either
eastern or Balkan in origin.
