eAuction #5, Los 114. Schätzpreis: CHF 120.00
Volusianus (251-253 AD). AE Sestertius (25-28 mm, 16.92 g), Roma (Rome), 253 AD. Obv. IMP CAE C VIB VOLVSIANO AVG, laurate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind. Rev. P M TR P IIII COS II P P / S - C, Volusian standing left, holding branch and short transverse sceptre. RIC IV, 3, p. 187, 244 (R).
Rare. Very fine.
An unusual and rare type. The fourth TR P seems odd for an emperor who reigned for two years only, and it has been suggested that Gallus not only adopted Decius' son Hostilian but may have adopted himself into Decius' family, thus being able to use his "father's" TRP counting on his and his son's coins.
