eAuction #60, Los 72. Schätzpreis: CHF 5'000.00
Vespasianus (69-79 AD). Aureus (18-19 mm, 7.00 g). ‘Judaea Capta’ commemorative. Rome, 69-70 AD. Obv. IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, Laureate head to right. Rev. Judaea seated right in mourning; trophy to left; IVDAEA in exergue. RIC II 1; Hendin 1464; Calicó 643; BMCR 31.
Rare and highly sought-after. Good fine.
This intriguing issue was struck to celebrate the Roman defeat of Judaea, the capture of Jerusalem, and the destruction of the Jewish Second Temple during the First Jewish War. The seated personified Judaea evokes the iconographic language of the defeated and degraded prisoner.
