Caracalla (AD 198-217), AV Aureus (20 mm, 7.03 g), Rome, 205 AD. Obv. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust to right. Rev. PONTIF TR P VIII COS II, Mars, naked but for cloak over shoulder, standing left, right foot on helmet, holding olive-branch and spear. RIC 80a; BMC 476; C. 419.
Rare. With a wonderful portrait of the young emperor. Lustrous and good extremely fine.
From the collection of J.C.S. Rashleigh and ex Glendining & Co. Sale January 14th 1953, lot 63. There stated to be from "the Burrage cabinet".
