eAuction #66, Los 107. Schätzpreis: CHF 75.00
Kings of Parthia. Meherdates, usurper (49/50 AD). AR Drachm (19-21 mm, 3.72 g), Ekbatana. Obv. Bust of Meherdates facing, wart on forehead, wearing tiara, stars flanking. Rev. Archer seated right on throne, holding bow, monogram below bow.
Sellwood 67.1 ('Vonones II'); Shore 368 ('Vonones II'); Sunrise 418.
Rare and very fine.
Meherdates was a Parthian prince that was held hostage in Rome. In 49 AD, Claudius sent him east to usurp the Parthian Throne, but after some early successes, he was quickly defeated by the legitimate king Gotarzes II who captured him and had his ears cut off.
