eAuction #9, Lot 15. Estimate: CHF 250.00
Delos, Cyclades. AE11 (1.13 g), c. 308-167 BC. Obv. Laureate head of Apollo right. Rev. Δ - H, lyra; to right, small bird (swan?) standing left. SNG Cop. 668 var. (no bird).
Very rare. Very fine.
From the BCD and Copenhagen collections, comes with the original Copenhagen collection ticket.
With just 3.5 km2, Delos is one of the smallest of the Cyclades islands, but as a holy island with a very important Apollo sanctuary, it was of great cultural importance. The island was also chosen as meeting place for the so-called Delian League, an alliance of Athens with many other Greek poleis with the purpose of fighting the Persians. Its congresses were held in the Apollo temple, and its treasury was kept on the island until Perikles moved it to Athens in 454 BC.
