Hierapolis, Phrygia. AE24 (7.74 g), time of Philip I (244-249 AD). Obv. ΛΑΙΡΒΗΝΟC, radiate and draped bust of Apollo Lairbenos to right. Rev. ΙΕΡΑΠΟΛΕΙΤΩΝ Κ ΚVΖΙΚΗΝΩΝ ΟΜΟΝΟΙΑ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ, clasped hands. Franke/Nollé 793. BMC 262.
Rare. Homonoia-issue between Hierapolis and Kyzikos. Good very fine.
From the collection of Professor Peter Robert Franke.
The sanctuary of Apollo Lairbenos at Hierapolis was excavated in 1960. It was constructed on top of a cavern which, according to Strabo and Pliny, contained venomous fumes and could only be safely entered by priests of Magna Mater (= Leto).
