eAuction #51 - Literature sale III, Los 169. Schätzpreis: CHF 5.00
Schulman, Jacques. Amsterdam, 15-16 November 1966.
Catalogue No. 244. Serooskerke (W) Muntvondst van Gouden Munten. Periode:
1422-1622. 1023 lots, 23 plates. Illustrated card covers as issued, worn.
Interior Very Good.
A note from BCD: The two short articles in English and the preface by
Jacques Schulman himself give a pretty good idea of the hoard’s importance.
There are four “event “ photographs, one showing Princess Beatrix looking at
one of the coins and a useful map of Western Europe indicating the relative
quantities of coins that came from each mint. Finally, Dr. H. Enno van Gelder,
the Keeper of the Royal Coin Cabinet had this to say in his introductory
article: “…the retaining of all hoards as they come to light into public
ownership would dry up the only source from which private collections can be
supplied, and would thus lead to a decline in the interest now shown in the
material gathered together in museums”. Wise and prophetic words, ignored or
forgotten today.
