eAuction #50, Los 257. Schätzpreis: CHF 6'000.00
Maximinus II Daia as Caesar (305-309 AD). AV Aureus (19-20 mm, 5.28 g), Alexandria mint, c. 308/309. Obv. MAXIMINVS NOB CAES, Laureate head right. Rev. SOLE INVICTO, Sol, radiate and in long robe, standing left, raising right hand and holding with left head of Serapis; * - Δ across fields; ALE in exergue. RIC -- (cf. 96); Calico --.
Extremely rare and apparently unpublished. Insignificant scratch on neck, otherwise, very fine.
The only Alexandrinian gold coins known for Galerius Caesar to date were multiples bearing the mint mark -/-/ALE and aurei with Δ/-/ALE. This Aureus reveals a hitherto unknown series in the mint's gold output and is therefore of outmost importance to the study of its coinage.
