eAuction #50, Los 134. Schätzpreis: CHF 100.00
Maximinus I (235-238 AD). AE31 (16.22 g), Ninica-Claudiopolis, Cilicia. Obv. C IUL UЄΠ MAXIMUΓ CAЄГ (!), laureate, draped and cuirassed of Maximinus I to right; five countermarks: three (!) figures of Victory-Nike, Rev. COL NINIC - CLAV, She-wolf standing right under tree, suckling the twins. SNG Levante -. SNG Paris -. SNG PFPS 981.
Beautiful light green patina.
This is a most unusual coin: The - obviously Greek - die cutter combined a blundered legend for Maximus Caesar with the laureate and bearded portrait of Maximinus I. Later, five countermarks were applied, of which no less than three are the same Victory-Nike punch.
