Commodus (177-192 AD). AE27 (10.20 g), Tarsos, Cilicia. Obv. AYT K M AYP KOMOΔOC, bearded bust of Commodus to right, wearing the taenia and robes of a Demiourgos. Rev. AΔP KOM TAP MH B NEΩKOPO / agonistic crown inscribed KOMOΔE; above, OIKYME. SNG Paris 1466 var. Ziegler 684 (this coin).
Rare. Very fine.
The emperor here wars the garnment of a Demiourgos, a local senior Magistrate. This honor was probably bestowed upon him on the occasion of the games held in his name that the reverse refers to.
