eAuction #7, Los 55. Schätzpreis: CHF 150.00
Hatra, Mesopotamia. Pseudo-autonomous AE24 (12.75 g), time of Hadrian (?). Obv. Radiate and draped bust of sun-god Shamash right, legend to right. Rev. Eagle with spread wings above inverted S C; all within wreath. SNG Cop. 232.
Rare. Very fine.
Hatra was the capital of a principality usually either siding with the Romans or
the Parthians in the many wars in that area. Its coins show the deep influence
of Roman culture on the region by copying the well-known reverse type from
Antioch. The city was eventually captured and destroyed (probably in the 240ies) by
the Sasanian king Ardashir (or Shapur).
