eAuction #7, Los 104. Schätzpreis: CHF 900.00
Carus (282-283 AD). AE Double Antoninianus (21-22 mm, 3.24 g), Lugdunum (Lyon), fall 282 AD. Obv. IMP C M AVR CARVS P F AVG, draped and cuirassed bust with single radiate crown right. Rev. ABVNDANTIA AVG, galley with oarsman left, lion-head rostrum. Ex. X ET I. Cf. RIC V, 2, p. 135, 5 (R2), cf. Bastien 443 (2 specimens) (both with double radiate crown).
Extremely rare. Pierced, otherwise, very fine. Uncleaned as found.
An enigmatic piece, clearly part of the extremely rare Carus double Antoninianus series, marked with X ET I on the reverse and a double radiate crown on the obverse (known in just three specimens: London, Oxford and Jacquier Katalog 35 (2007), p. 70, 601 (broken and glued, 5000 EUR)). Our piece, however, has just a single radiate crown, an apparently unknown variety for this issue. The reverse type of ABVNDANTIA with galley is unique to these double Antoniniani and may refer to abundance in general, although a connection to a specific grain transport is plausible. The carefully placed reverse piercing makes it likely that the owner paid attention to the meaning of the issue.
