eAuction #5, Los 23. Schätzpreis: CHF 275.00
Mantineia, Peloponnesos. AR Trihemiobol (13 mm, 1.24 g), c. 330s-320s BC. Obv. Head of Athena in crestless Corinthian helmet right. Rev. [MA]/NT (retrograde), Ornamental trident. HN p. 449 = Rhousopoulos (Hirsch XIII, 1905), pl. XXXI, 2824 = Traité III 967 (same dies).
Extremely rare, possibly the second example known. Fine.
From the BCD collection and ex LHS 96 (2006), 1482 and ex R. Langstein, FPL 238, February 1984, 11.
The trident on the reverse refers to Mantinea’s patron god, Poseidon Hippios, and also appeared on the shields of Mantinea’s soldiers.
