eAuction #18, Los 8. Schätzpreis: CHF 750.00
Himera, Sicily. AR Drachm (20 mm, 3.92 g), c. 483/2-473 BC. Obv. Cock standing left. Rev. Crab, HIMEPA. SNG ANS 154.
Struck on a large flan. Good very fine.
In 483/2, the tyrant Theron of Akragas waged war against Terillos of Himera. After losing the city, Terillos called the Carthaginian general Hamilcar to aid, who landed with a huge army nearby Himera but was defeated by Theron and Gelon of Syracuse in 480 BC (reportedly on the same day the battle of Salamis!). Himera remained under the control of Akragas until Theron died in 473, which explains the appearance of the crab of Akragas on its coins during this time.
