eAuction #22, Los 82. Schätzpreis: CHF 10'000.00
Claudius II Gothicus (268-270 AD). "Heavy" Aureus (19 mm, 5.39 g), Mediolanum (Milano). Obv. IMP CLAVDIVS P F AVG, laureate and cuirassed bust right. Rev. SPES PVBLICA, Spes advancing left, holding flower in right hand and raising skirt with left. Calico 3952; RIC 133 (R3); Cohen 280 (900.-).
Very rare. Minor dark spots, otherwise superb extremely fine and virtually as struck.
Marcus Aurelius Valerius Claudius, a professional soldier from Sirmium (or, possibly, Naissus), took the purple in 268 after the assassination of Gallienus. In these desperate times, with Britain, Gaul and Spain lost to the Gallic usurpers and most of the east under control of Palmyra, Claudius faced massive invasions of the Balkans and Italy by the Goths and the Alamanni in summer 268. Moving to Moesia, he won an overwhelming victory over the Goths in the battle of Naissus, earning him the surname Gothicus. Just a few months later, Claudius and his legions routed the Alamannic army at the Lacus Benacus (Lake Garda) in Northern Italy, successfully ending what hitherto might have posed the biggest threat to the Empire's existence. In late 269, Claudius moved to Pannonia to prepare war against the Vandals, but he fell victim to the so-called plague of Cyprian and died early in 270.
The reverse type of this Aureus, struck at the army's Headquarters in Mediolanum, reflects the hopes of the emperor and the army for better times. It took five more years and a number of astounding victories by Claudius' officer and successor Aurelian to expel the remaining barbarian invaders and reunite the empire by conquering the western and eastern provinces.
