eAuction #1, Los 131. Schätzpreis: CHF 75.00
Aureolus (267-268 AD). In the name of Postumus. AE Antoninianus (18 mm, 3.16 g), Mediolanum (Milano). Obv. IMP POSTVMVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. CONCORD EQVIT, Concordia standing left on prow, holding rudder and patera. Cunetio 2474.
Some surface roughness. Good very fine.
Aureolus was a cavalry general who revolted against Gallienus and declared
himself ally of Postumus. After he captured the Mediolanum mint, he started
issuing coins in the name of his chosen protector, but Postumus did not support
him. After the death of Gallienus, Aureolus was soon overcome and put to death
by Claudius II.
Most of Aureolus' reverse legends end on EQVIT or
AEQVIT, referring to the heavy cavalry units he commanded.
