eAuction #32, Los 29. Schätzpreis: CHF 7'500.00
Kings of Persis. Bagadat (Bayadat) (early - mid 3rd Century BC). AR Tetradrachm (26 mm, 16.65 g). Obv. Bearded head right, wearing kyrbasia with flaps tied behind. Rev. Fire-temple of Ahura-Mazda; to left, the king standing right in praying attitude; to right, standard; Aramaic legend. Alram p. 166, 519.
Very rare. An outstanding portrait of fine style. Extremely fine / good very fine.
Bagadat, a Persian noble from Persepolis, seceded from the Seleukid empire at about the same time as the Parthians and Baktrians. His impressive Tetradrachms combine Hellenistic numismatic artistry with disctintively Persian imagery, boasting both his independence from Greek rule and his worship of the Zoroastric god Ahura Mazda.
