eAuction #35, Los 43. Schätzpreis: CHF 120.00
Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD). AE As (25 mm, 9.91 g), Roma (Rome), 176-177 AD. Obv. M ANTONINVS AVG GERM SARM TR P XXXI, laureate head right. Rev. IMP VIII COS III, galley with four rowers and Neptune under arch on the stern holding trident, FELICITATI AVG P P above. RIC III, 1196.
Scarce. About very fine.
After many years of military campaigns first on the Danube frontier and later against the rebellion of Cassius in the east, Marcus Aurelius finally travelled back to Rome in 176 AD. The Historia Augusta tells us that his fleet faced a violent storm during the crossing of the Mediterranean, an event to which this coin alludes by showing Neptune as the steersman of the imperial galley and praising its safe return.
