eAuction #35, Los 2. Schätzpreis: CHF 750.00
Rhode (Rhoses / Roses), Spain. AR Drachm (19 mm, 4.25 g), c. 210-197 BC (?). Obv. POΔHTΩN, female head left, wearing wreath of grain ears. Rev. Rose seen from above, divided into four segments. Villaronga 3 var., SNG Cop. 633 var. (both in earlier style).
Extremely rare. Flan crack, otherwise, very fine.
Rhode was a small trading settlement in Northeastern Spain founded as a sub-colony of Massalia in the 4th Century BC. It's coinage is extremely rare but was copied by some Celtiberian and Gallic tribes. Our specimen is of distinctively later style than the earlier Drachms commonly dated to around 300 BC, hence a dating to the Punic war period prior to the final Roman occupation seems more plausible.
