Rare. Beautifully toned. Very fine.
Constantinus III was elevated by the British legions in 407 and was accepted by Honorius as co-emperor after he had successfully secured the Rhine frontier and the Alpine passes. New barbarian invasions and the revolt of his general Gerontius in Spain led to the removal of his last troops from Britain, which eventually resulted in the permanent loss of the province in 410. The usurper was soon trapped in his capital Arelate (Arles), where he was beheaded some time after his surrender to Honorius' general Constantius III.
