eAuction #51 - Literature sale III, Lot 31. Estimate: CHF 10.00
Houghton,
Arthur. “The elephants of Nisibis,” ANSMN
31 (1986) 107-124, plates 27-29. Pages stapled together as issued. Slightly
worn at edges. Very Good. Daehn 5309.
A note from BCD: From the late Silvia Hurter’s library with the
author’s dedication. This writer has developed an emotional link to Seleucid
elephants ever since reading in Professor Scullard’s enthralling book “The
Elephant in the Greek and Roman World” about the reaction of the unnamed Greek
who, unable to bear the sight, attacked and killed Gnaeus Octavius in 163 BC as
his soldiers were hamstringing the elephants of Antiochus III.
