eAuction #51 - Literature sale III, Lot 130. Estimate: CHF 20.00
Hess-Leu. Lucerne, 16 April
1964. Auktion 24. Antike Münzen. 475 lots, 18 plates.
Estimates sheet and prices realized list. Glossy white illustrated card covers
as issued. Very Good. Spring 358
A note from BCD: The
writer remembers examining a copy of this catalogue after pleading with a local
coin dealer to allow him to “just have a look”. This dealer was in the enviable
position of receiving all Hess-Leu and M&M auction catalogues and for local
collectors to be allowed to even look through them was considered a great
favour. The Greek rarities pictured on the plates appeared to be almost
mythical, coins the like of which could only be seen and touched when visiting
places like the British Museum. To own such masterpieces was beyond the wildest
dreams of a young collector. Fifty years later it can be said, looking through
the BCD auction catalogues with a feeling of quiet satisfaction, that an
“impossible dream” did actually become reality.
