eAuction #51 - Literature sale III, Lot 154. Estimate: CHF 5.00
Rassion, Mme J.M. Aix-les-Bains, 28 March 1981. 487 lots, 5 colour
plates, illustrations throughout. Glossy red illustrated card covers. Bent
corners. Very Good.
A note from BCD: A little known catalogue of an auction that was a
one-off attempt of Credit de la Bourse’s Mme Rassion to conduct a sale in the
well-known resort of Aix-les-Bains. The catalogue starts with a selection of
ancients that is followed by French and foreign. The“hors texte” colour plates
have a rather garish red background that does not do justice to the coins but
what steals the show, in the opinion of this writer, is the famous Edmond de
Goncourt quotation from his will, displayed in large print after the tenth
page. If all firms producing auction catalogues would follow suit and print
this wonderful aphorism, or its excellent translation that appeared in the 60’s
in a Seaby Bulletin, then perhaps ancient coin collectors would be viewed today
under a different light.
