eAuction #54, Lot 56. Estimate: CHF 250.00
Pallantion, Achaia, under the Achaean League. AE Tetrachalkon (20 mm, 4.24 g), c. 191-146 BC. Obv. [IΠΠAPXOΣ], Zeus, nude, standing left, holding Nike in his right hand and long scepter with his left. Rev. AXAIΩN ΠAΛΛANTEΩN, Female figure, Achaia, seated left, holding wreath in her right hand and long scepter with her left. BMC 167. Clerk 79. BCD 1590 (this coin).
Extremely rare, one of very few known and the only specimen on acsearch. Fine.
From the BCD Collection, LHS 96 (2006), 1590.
The city of Pallantion issued some silver coins in classical time, but in fifty years of collecting, BCD was not able to find any offered for sale anywhere. The 1st Century Achaean League Hemidrachms are more common, but the bronze coinage is of the highest rarity: this is the only example that has been offered for sale in the past fifteen years.
