eAuction #54, Lot 109. Estimate: CHF 100.00
Iulia Domna (193-217 AD). Assarion (21 mm, 3.01 g), Thouria, Messenia. Obv. IOYΛIA ΔOMNA CЄBACT, draped bust to right. Rev. ΘOVPIATWN / Λ - A, Artemis standing left, holding long torch with both hands. BCD -. NCP p. 65, pl. O, XXIII.
Extremely rare. Fine.
From the BCD Collection (not in previous sales).
The city of Thouria was given to the Spartans by Augustus in gratitude for their support at Actium (hence the Λ-A on the reverse), and as a way of punishing the Messenians who had helped Marc Antony.
