eAuction #57, Lot 79. Estimate: CHF 28'000.00
Constantine I 'the Great' (306-337 AD) for Constantius II Caesar. AV Multiplum of 1 1/2 solidi (22-23 mm, 6.43 g), Trier, 326/327 AD. Obv. FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust to right. Rv. PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS, Prince standing right, holding transverse spear and globe. RIC 495 (this coin).
Apparently unique and with a prestigious pedigree. Professionally repaired hole at 12 o'clock on obverse, otherwise, very fine to extremely fine.
From the Trau Collection and ex Gilhofer & Ranschburg/Hess 1935, 4263.
Multipla of this type have most probably been distributed to military officials and members of the imperial administration in occasion of Crispus' and Constantinus' II Decennalia (March 1st 326).
