eAuction #7, Lot 69. Estimate: CHF 100.00
Septimius Severus (193-211 AD). AE Sestertius (28 mm, 21.60 g), Roma (Rome), 193 AD. Obv. IMP CAES L SEPT SEV PERT AVG, laureate head right. Rev. LEG XIIII GEM M V / TR P COS, legionary eagle between two standards. RIC IV, 1, p. 180, 652 (R).
Rare. Flan fault on obverse, otherwise, about very fine.
The Legio XIIII Gemina Martia Victrix was either levied by Julius Caesar in 57 BC or by Octavian in 41/40 BC. In 118/119 AD, she moved her headquarter to Carnuntum in Pannoniae, where she played a key role in the proclamation of the Pannonian governor Septimius Severus to emperor in 193 AD; an event commemorated by this Sestertius.
