eAuction #1, Lot 54. Estimate: CHF 1'200.00
Persian Satraps. Datames (378-372 BC). AR Stater (20-24 mm, 10.83 g). Obv. Female head facing (copied, ultimately, from the Arethusa of Kimon), turned slightly to the left, wearing drop earring, necklace of pendants and with a hair band over her forehead. Rev. Head of bearded warrior to right, wearing crested helmet adorned with tendril and with raised ear flap; on helmet, AM; Aramaic legend right. SNG BN 258 ff. var. (no AM).
Toned. Light die-shift on obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
From the De La Tour collection and ex Hess-Divo AG 314 (2009), 1208.
An apparently unpublished variety with AM on helmet, most probably an artist's signature.
