eAuction #67, Lot 93. Estimate: CHF 120.00
C. Memmius C.f. AR Denarius (18-20 mm, 3.93 g), Rome, 56 BC. Obv. C·MEMMI·C·F, Head of Ceres to right, wearing barley wreath. Rev. C·MEMMIVS / IMPERATOR, Trophy; in the foreground, kneeling captive with hands tied behind his back. Syd. 920; Craw. 427/1.
Banker's marks. Well centered and very fine.
Purchased privately from Tom Cederlind in 2010.
The
reverse refers to the moneyer’s uncle, C. Memmius L.f., the commander
of the victorious Roman forces in Bithynia in the early 50s BC, who
received the title imperator for them in BC 57. This coin was struck
shortly thereafter to commemorate that event.
